i decided to use philbury's version of the cookies since i've had fond memories of the cookbook when i was younger. i couldn't help but feel a twinge of uneasiness, however, as even though those were fond memories, i always seem to mess up cookie recipes. but i trudged on! until after i creamed the butter and sugars together that i had NO EGG. luckily (or rather unluckily?) i had some quail eggs in the fridge and i considered what the harm of substituting them would be. then that's when things started to go wrong...that is, i accidentally misread "baking powder" for "baking soda". horrified, i tried to scoop up as much as i could but i knew it was too late. and i had no shortening like the recipe called for so i decided to try and rescue the recipe with an vegetable oil substitution. D':
again, trudging onwards, i followed directions as told and put in the fixin's. the choclate chips were old. oh my god, the chocolate chips were old!! i decided to ignore this fact and incorporate the cranberries and walnuts together in the mix and crossing my fingers for the best.
and you guessed it....the cookies wouldn't flatten on the initial batch. so i had the ingenious idea of flattening them out mid-cooking. it turned out okay but after having the first bite...definitely had a bisquit quality NOT that of a cookie. *sigh*
then i decided to make it into a cookie bar. why, not? couldn't hurt it right? afterall, it was more buisquit than anything...yeah. right. after i took it out of the oven, it didn't look so bad and i felt a little comforted that maybe, just maybe, it wouldn't be so bad...
that is until while i was looking at the finished product and had the horrible idea of putting melted chocolate on top. so, let me say melting chocolate is not as easy as it looks. the logical part of my brain knew this but the other side didn't want to listen. so what i ended up with was a lump of not so usable chocolate. but dammit, i didn't want to throw it away! what a waste!! D:
so what i ended up doing was using a bit of milk and whisked the chocolate into it so that it was liquidy enough to drizzle. and of course, this didn't want to harden properly so the entire thing was stuck in the fridge to set (hopefully). *sigh*
sooo, all in all, it was a major disaster. and what have i learned from this folks? read the recipe first, check to make sure i have my ingredients instead of assuming that i do, and make sure i know how to melt chocolate the way it supposed to. on the upside, this microwaved and topped with ice cream probably wouln't taste half bad. but that's a different experiment for a different day...
